BMSCE IEEE conducted a workshop on Augmented Reality(AR) and Virtual Reality(VR) on 9th and 10th March 2018 in association with Tequed Labs. The venue for the workshop was BSN Hall and the duration was four hours from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Mr. Adithya and Mr. Supreeth were the course instructors for our workshop.
Tequed Labs is a company which works in collaboration with different colleges and organizes various technical based training programs for interested students. They also provide projects at the end of each training program on the basis of which students are chosen for competitions across the seas. The details of the workshop was spread through facebook and other social media. Registration link was provided in the spam message through which we received all our registrations. The fees for IEEE members was Rs 600 and for NON-IEEE members was Rs 700. Money for the same was collected in person. Total number of IEEE attendees were 21 and NON-IEEE members were 9 which summed up to a total of 30 participants.
The workshop started with the introduction of Virtual Reality. They held the attention of the students by explaining them about Virtual Reality(VR) through interesting and impressive videos. The entire process was described in an explicit manner and after making sure that every single person present in the hall had got a basic idea of what they are going to experience, the instructors started with the hands- on workshop.
Firstly, UNITY 3D software which is by far one of the most ubiquitous of tools being used today for VR development was passed on to all the participants. Then, basic instructions about the running and the functioning of the software was provided. After that, the process of development of a game named “Maze Runner” started. The students were first asked to download images of maze and grass patch from the internet and only after everyone followed up they went further ahead with their instructions.
The 2nd day of the workshop started with the distribution of VR Headset which was given to all the participants without any extra fee. Then, the delivery of instructions to complete the game was resumed. The students were given a set of code to work upon. The code was basically the description of how the game should proceed, how the gamer would score and when would he be considered to have won the game. After everyone successfully wrote the program they were able to run the program and view the 360° of the game they developed on their own.
“The implementation of virtual reality manages to get the combination of hardware, software and sensory synchronicity just right. It achieves something known as a sense of presence, where the subject really feels like they are present in that environment.” With the proper guidance of the instructors the participants were able to fulfill the above agenda.
Then, we switched on to the next topic which covered Augmented Reality(AR). The videos used to explain engrossed all the students and kept them hooked up till the end. After the basics were covered a project was given to strengthen the understanding that Augmented Reality is an enhanced version of reality where live, direct or indirect views of physical real-world environments are augmented with superimposed computer-generated images over a user's view of the real-world, which enhances one’s perception of reality. After this, they were taught to use the VR Headset and everyone enjoyed the experience.
With the proper guidance of the experienced instructors all the participants were able to grasp the true essence of Virtual and Augmented Reality. Overall, this 2 day workshop turned out to be a huge success with everyone having received what they had hoped for and the process of learning was enjoyed to the fullest extent.

The participants gave a very positive feedback and even requested for another such discussion to be conducted. Ultimately, it was a grand success.
