Value Added Course on Digital Image Processing using Matlab

Value Added Course on “DIGITAL IMAGE PROCESSING USING MATLAB” (Hands-On Session) was conducted in association with the Department of Computer Science & Engineering from 21st to 28th September 2015 (duration of 5 days). The organizers of the session are Namratha M (Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, BMSCE) and Saritha A N (Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, BMSCE). Online Registration Link was provided to register and an overwhelming response of 100+ was received out of which around 40 students were shortlisted to attend the course. A total of 43 students participated in this event from various departments such as Computer Science & Engineering, Information science & Engineering, Electronics & Communication, Electrical & Electronics, Medical Electronics, M.Tech (Machine Design) and Mechanical Engineering. 4 volunteers supported the entire session, 2 of them were from Computer Science & Engineering, 1 from Electronics & Communication and 1 from Medical Electronics.
The sessions were conducted mainly by Namratha M (Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, BMSCE) who was supported by Saritha A N (Assistant Professor, Department of Computer Science & Engineering, BMSCE).

On the first day of the session (21st September 2015) the following topics were covered:
Introduction to Scalar, Vector & Matrices, Array and Matrix Indexing, I/O operation with Images and data types. Point and Block processing using Linear and Non-Linear Transfer Functions. Color Image Processing (RGB and YcbCr color planes), Plotting of Histograms. Introduction to Pattern Recognition.
Also at the end of the session a group discussion was arranged to evaluate the understanding capabilities of the students.

On the second day of the session (22nd September 2015) hands-on session for the topics covered on first day were demonstrated and students were allowed to work on the same.

On the third day of the session (23rd September 2015) the following topics were covered:
Introduction to Color, Shape and Texture Based Feature Extraction. Image Enhancement by Spatial Filtering: Low pass filtering, Median filtering and understanding different types of Noises. Image Sharpening by High Pass filters and High Boost filters. Derivative Operators for Edge Detection Image Segmentation by Thresholding and Clustering Approach.

On the fourth day of the session (24th September 2015) hands-on session for the topics covered on third day were demonstrated and students were allowed to work on the same.

On the fifth day of the session (28th September 2015), a concluding note on various methods and techniques that can be employed for Image Processing was discussed. Also, participants presented their project proposals related to Image Processing which they wish to do or already started. The best four ideas were presented Goodies from IEEE.
Online Feedback was taken at the end of the session and also certificate of participation were issued to all participants.
